- Kaafjord, Norway. Diving into history in the search of a WWW2 Submarine: Norway 1974, Kaafjord way above the Arctic Circle: I was fortunate to spend three weeks diving in a Norwegian fjord with a British diving club searching for a Second World war x-craft submarine which disappeared while trying to disable the powerful German battleship the Tirpitz in the fjord. We did not find any evidence of the midget submarines but we did find evidence of the Nazi’s presence.
- Alaska USA. Driving The Dalton Highway: Driving the long, remote and stunningly beautiful Alaskan and Dalton highways to Prudhoe Bay, the most northerly driving destination in North America. It is a road trip that every adventurous overlander should drive. It is one of the best ways of experiencing the immensity and grandeur of the northern reaches of North America.
- Indian Ocean. Scuba Diving amongst some of the ocean’s most impressive creatures: Swimming alongside awe inspiring ocean creatures has been a lifetime passion of mine. I was fortunate to have a close encounter with the enormous Whale Sharks in the Sea of Cortez, Mexico; play with 12-foot wingspan Manta’s in the waters of Kona Island, Hawaii and look up from 120 feet underwater to see the silhouettes of 100s of Hammerhead sharks gliding above me while in scuba diving in the Galapagos.
- Portugal. Experience the will of the people during the 1974 coup: By sheer coincidence and in complete ignorance of what was happening we entered Portugal on April 26th 1974 the day after the Carnation Revolution. This bloodless, peaceful coup introduced a new Constitution, the end of Portuguese colonialism, as well as civil liberties which had previously been banned under Caetano’s government. It was incredible to witness what people can achieve if they set their minds to it.
- Virunga Mountains, Rwanda. Trekking Gorillas in the Mist: Coming face to face with Highland Gorillas in the forests of the Virunga Mountains on the border of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda and Rwanda has been one of the most spiritual moments of my life. A gorilla family comprising infants, youngsters, mothers and the enormous 600lb Silverback were curious about us but their gentle nature allowed us to experience, a wildlife encounter of a lifetime.
