There is something really special being amongst friends old and new who share the passion of independent travel.
We were invited to present at Horizon Unlimited Travellers Meeting Canwest 2014. Horizon Unlimited also known as HUBB is THE website for motorcyclist travellers. We felt a bit like “gate crashers” arriving at Nakusp Campsite located in British Columbia we after all were certainly not on a 2-wheel motorbike of any type. Touring, regular, cruisers and sports motorcycles and even a couple of 3-wheeled motorbikes with sidecars surrounded us.
Yet we could not have been more welcomed by everyone especially Susan and Grant who founded Horizon Unlimited in 1997. Susan and Grant must have known that even 4 Wheel travelers are on the HUBB forum seeking advice and recommendations for travels across the globe. They are now encouraging the participation of all travelers 2, 3 and 4 wheel vehicles all their events, which they hold in many countries around the world.
We presented on the Friday evening to an attentive audience and this was followed by a great meal in which everyone seemed to participate. Chatter and laughter filled the hall as many travel tales were shared. It was relaxed and informal and it felt as good as being on the road again.
After supper and all of Saturday there were many presentations, demonstrations and forums in which we participated. We even considered getting ourselves “bikes” and it was recommended we take lessons and purchase a Honda Rebel as our first bikes. What were we thinking?
Nights we all gathered around fires pits, shared more stories, had fantastic drinks made especially for us by Miles, competed in ridiculous games and ate and ate. All had a good time.
Sunday we bid farewell, knowing that we all hope to be back next year with new travel stories.
Hi Tom, Janet
Wish i had know about the HUBB event in Nakusp in September as I would loved to have attended – would have been great to have met you both in person and to hear the tales of all the others as well. We are close , living in Kelowna. You mention it will be on again in 2014 – somewhere in BC or Alberta possibly…?
Also, I do hope our paths can cross at some point. We travel to Calgary on some occasions or if you pass through Kelowna my wife and I would be delighted to take you to dinner and rattle through some more arcane over-landing questions !
